About Creative Nest:
What is Creative Nest?
Creative Nest Studio, or “The Nest” as we lovingly call it, is a unique space which offers a home base for our do-it-yourself (DIY) sign painting events. We hold public parties as well as private events and weekly appointment bookings. In addition, we offer in-store shopping at Creative Nest & Company, featuring ready-made items such as small-scale custom vinyl, rustic painted farmhouse-style signs, lovely home décor pieces and other products from local artisans.
What are your hours?
Creative Nest Studio is open to the public Wednesdays 11am – 5pm, Thursdays 11am – 8pm, Fridays 11am – 5pm and Saturdays 10am – 1pm. Hours subject to change based on private bookings and off-site commitments. Changes to weekly hours would be announced on the storefront, as well as on Facebook and Instagram whenever possible.
Do you take custom orders?
We love to accommodate custom requests! Since our focus is on DIY (do-it-yourself), the quickest way to get your hands on a custom piece is to make arrangements to make it in our studio! We’ll walk you through the sign-making steps by appointment or at a public DIY event! Not in a rush or no time to make? Ask us about placing a custom order.
What if I don’t want to make my own sign? Will you make it for me?
We can take custom orders to make signs for you as our schedule allows. The quickest way to get your hands on a custom piece is to make arrangements to make it in our studio! If you’d like us to create for you, please allow 10-14 business days for production AFTER your design request details are approved. Production times will vary, especially during peak seasons (April – June and September – December). Advanced planning and handmade go hand-in-hand and we can be most helpful to you when provided with plenty of notice. Each item we make is handcrafted with time, experience, love and care.
Do you have items for sale in your store? Can they be personalized?
Yes and maybe! Creative Nest & Company offers a wide range of rustic home décor pieces. If you see something in the store you’d like customized, ask us! We may be able to add names/dates or other wording to ready-made signage. Additional fees apply.
Do you make custom vinyl decals?
Yes! While we have the capability to do some larger sized vinyl work, we prefer to keep custom requests at a 12” width and smaller. We offer both temporary (indoor grade) and permanent (outdoor grade) vinyl in limited colours and finishes. Specs on the vinyl we offer, as well as application instructions, can be provided upon request. We do not assist with application to vehicles, or parts of vehicles of any kind, or with removal of your vinyl
Can I order custom clothing?
We can assist with heat-pressed projects if the garment is provided by the customer. Cotton or cotton-blend materials are needed. Heat sensitive materials (rayon, modal, etc) may scorch under our high temperature press. Creative Nest Studio makes no guarantees about the quality of your garment during or after the pressing process and will not provide refunds or replacements on items that may become damaged unexpectedly. Requests are made at the customer’s risk.
Do I need an appointment to come in and paint?
That would be lovely! Since we prep all materials and stencils in-house and by hand, advanced notice is preferred for sign making. We offer weekly appointment bookings most Fridays at 11am, 2pm and 6:30pm, as well as options for larger group bookings on Tuesday – Thursday. Drop-ins are welcome most Saturdays between 10am – 1pm (arrive by 12pm). Choose from a variety of designs that fit our 5″x5″ and 12″x6″ sizes (min purchase price is $15+hst/guest). Custom designs always require advanced notice and registration is always required for public workshops.
Can I order supplies from you to make signs on my own time?
You can! One of the best things about attending a DIY event is that you learn the tips and tricks to complete your very own beautifully rustic wood sign. If you’ve attended a class with Creative Nest in the past, you may request a Grab-and-Go kit at 15% off the regular price (discount not applicable on minis, birthday size signs or custom design work). Your kit includes your blank, unstained wood, stencil in design of your choice (preplaced or for you to place on the wood yourself), hanging hardware, brushes, cups and paint (if needed) and instructions to keep you on track. If you need a hand with touch ups, call us to make a daytime appointment (subject to fee). If you haven’t attended a previous workshop with us in the past, we strongly recommend it before requesting a grab-and-go kit as working with adhesive stencils for the first (and 2nd, 3rd…) time can be tricky! Keep in mind that individual results will vary. Free replacements are not provided should your materials become damaged after pick up, or should results not be as desired. Wood stains/colour washes are not included with grab-and-go kits.
What methods of payment are accepted?
Creative Nest Studio accepts cash, credit and debit in the shop. We also accept e-transfer in advance to firstname.lastname@example.org, or payment via our website.
I made a purchase but changed my mind. Can I return my item?
Due to the custom nature of our studio, there are no refunds, exchanges or returns on items made or purchased within.
I want to visit your store. Where are you located and where can I park?
Creative Nest Studio is located at 112 March St., Units 1 + 2. There are a limited number of metred parking spots in front of the Studio. We’re also located near the Spring/March St. 2-hour parking lot.
Do you assist with fundraisers?
Creative Nest may be able to assist with fundraisers, depending on the needs of your organization. We’ll determine our availability to help on a case by case basis. Please contact us to discuss.

I’m interested in starting a business or new hobby. What equipment do you use and where do you purchase your supplies?
Crafting is a blast! We completely understand your interest. We use a plotting machine to cut our materials and design software (passion + many hours, too!) to create each handmade piece in our shop. We suggest reading reviews and doing some research to decide on the equipment that would best suit your needs and interests. At this time, we do not offer instruction on plotting machine use, design software tutorials or suppliers. Interested in trying your hand at DIY painting? We’d LOVE to help!! About Creative Nest: DIY Events
When do you hold your DIY Sign Painting Events? How do I register? How many can attend?
We usually offer public DIY events every Thursday evening from 6pm – 9pm, with the option to book your own private party on Wednesday and Friday evenings. Click the Calendar to browse upcoming events. We also accept individual appointment bookings during daytime hours Wednesday – Fridays, and children’s birthday party bookings on Saturday afternoons.
Do I need to tell you in advance what colors and stain I want to use?
No! When you arrive we will show you examples of different colour washes and paints to help you decide what will look the best. Our house-made colour washes are a faux-stain that give a similar look to true wood stain but without the odor and lengthy dry time. We have a wide variety of colours and painting techniques to satisfy everyone’s eye for design!
Do I have to pick my project ahead of time?
All of our workshops require pre-registration so that we can have adequate time to prep and customize your material. Project selection and customization information for your project is required at the time of booking. Please be sure to double-check your spelling and information to ensure your project stencil and materials will be ready for you at the start of the workshop.
Can children attend DIY events?
Yes! We love to bring families together and offer a unique space for young, not-so-young & in between. While most public events draw in an adult crowd, all public DIY events at Creative Nest Studio are family friendly, unless otherwise posted. Children must be accompanied by an adult. DIY events require attention to detail and some concentration. Ages 8+ is recommended. Supervised infants/toddlers and small children (under 8 years) are welcome to attend with parents during daytime hours. Due to limited space in our studio, we ask that only paying guests attend our workshops. Looking to create one large piece with a buddy? Please contact us in advance to discuss.
Can you replicate logos and images I’ve seen online?
If you own the rights to a logo (perhaps from your own business) and are looking to have it painted on a sign, we’d love to help! If a photo is sent to us that is not our own, we may help bring your vision to life with a redesign, though we cannot replicate designs that are not our own without written permission from the original artist. We do not work with copyrighted materials such as sports logos, movie characters, etc.
Will I receive a design proof before my event or appointment?
Not necessarily. If you have an appointment or will be attending a DIY event and have requested a design from our Facebook album of predesigns, a proof may not be sent in advance as your design will look exactly as pictured in our album. If you have requested changes of any kind (i.e. addition of names, dates, resizing, font changes, etc), a design proof will always be sent in advance for your approval. Brand new custom designs are subject to additional fees.
I have a large group. Can we book a private party? Will you come into my home?
Yes! Creative Nest Studio accepts private party bookings on Wednesday and Friday evenings with a minimum of 8 guests (or 8 signs at a minimum of $35+hst/sign) and can accommodate up to about 20 guests in our studio, depending on your project sizes. Semi-private bookings can be considered for groups of less than 8 (we may book another small party in with yours, though your group can sit together). A $100 nonrefundable deposit secures your date and is applied to the balance of your party once the minimum has been met. The same group minimums apply to off-site parties within Sault Ste. Marie, ON city limits, with an additional $40 fee to cover travel and set up. Hosts must sign an Alcohol & Liability Waiver prior to hosting an off-site event. Call us for more info. We prefer a minimum of 3 weeks planning time for private parties.
Can I host a child’s birthday party at Creative Nest?
Absolutely! Children LOVE getting creative at The Nest! We recommend a minimum age of 7 for DIY sign painting and offer smaller sign sizes to keep things manageable and costs down for you! Individual results will vary. Parties can be booked for groups of 10-15. Call us for booking details.
Can I bring food and drinks? What about adult beverages?
For public DIY events, light refreshments, bottled water and Keurig beverages are available for purchase. Creative Nest Studio is NOT liquor licensed. For private party bookings, food and beverages may be brought into the Studio. Alcohol is permitted within the Studio provided a proper liquor license has been obtained. Alcohol cannot be served to minors. The Renter is responsible for obtaining a liquor license and must present it, along with receipts from alcohol purchases, at the event. Alcohol is NOT permitted outside the building. Creative Nest Studio may also assist with obtaining a permit in the Renter’s name at the Renter’s expense.
What should I wear?
Wear something comfortable! While aprons are provided, clothing can be stained from paint spills and splatters.
I’m not very creative. Are you sure I can do this?
Absolutely! We use custom adhesive stencils to paint our designs on the wood. The stencils stay in place while we paint to help keep your design looking crisp and snazzy (no free-handing necessary!). The instructor will walk you through step by step to provide helpful tips and hands-on assistance as you need. We welcome all skill levels!
What sort of tools/supplies will we be using?
All of our DIY projects involve wood. You may use sandpaper or palm sanders, drills, adhesive stencil material, non-toxic acrylic paints, latex or chalk paints, acrylic colour washes (water-based, non-toxic, no-odor), hanging hardware and hammers. Creative Nest preps all wood in advance, so no wood cutting/building/sawing is required at the shop.
Can I put my sign outside?
You can! Wood signs painted in our studio must be outdoor clear coated to protect the painted design from fading, washing away/weathering with exposure to the elements. Use the outdoor wood coating product of your choice and follow the label instructions. While outdoor coating will help protect the painted design, we anticipate as with any wood piece left outdoors, that natural cracking/weathering will occur over time. You may wish to re-coat your project yearly, and avoid direct exposure to elements or year-round exposure for best results.
How long do DIY events take?
Public DIY events typically span 3 hours; however, the overall length of time will depend on how quickly you work and the size/complexity of your sign. Work time ranges from 1-3 hours, with most averaging 2.5 hours.
I have to leave the event early. Can you finish my sign for me?
Wood sign projects can be completed within the allotted event time. Due to time and space constraints, we kindly ask that projects not be left in the studio after your event. The instructor will not be able to make/finish your sign for you. You may return to finish your sign by appointment during store hours or by registering for another event (subject to fee).
